On admission of a service user it is important to ensure that, as well as planning for their care provision, you have complied with your obligations regarding their rights and interests. One key area that needs to be discussed with the service user or their representative is data protection. It is inevitable that you will need to share confidential information and sensitive personal data about the service user with third parties. However, it is important that you have clear instructions/ permission from the service user or their representative about what information you can share and with whom. You should not assume that a service user is happy for information about them to be shared with all potential agencies or even their family. Our templates help you explain to the service user or their representatives what you need to use their data for and why and give them the opportunity to make an informed choice.
